KCTV-5 Doctors on Call
Through our partnership with KCTV-5, the Research Brookside Campus participated in Doctors on Call. The "live" segment, which featured Daniel Kloster, M.D., Brad Freilich, M.D. and Robert Leitch, M.D., took place at the KCTV-5 studios on Saturday, June 24.
KCTV-5 health reporter Carolyn Long interviewed the doctors, while nurses from the Research Brookside Campus answered calls from the viewers. During commercial breaks, a three-minute infomercial promoted all of the outpatient services and state-of-the-art emergency care at the Research Brookside Campus.
Below are the nurses that volunteered their time for the "live" segment. We had great representation from various departments.
- Jenny Parkhurst (GI Lab)
- Barbara Fisk (GI Lab)
- Magdeline Truesdall (GI Lab)
- Sandra Turner (Pain Management)
- Mary Hill (Pain Management)
- Patricia Locascio (Pain Management)
- Joretta McKarnin (E.D.)
- Angela Giegerich (E.D.)
Picture Archiving and Communication System
Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) is scheduled to go "live" at Research Medical Center and the Research Brookside Campus later this summer. PACS consists of computing systems and their components used to capture, transfer, display and store digital information in a medical imaging environment. PACS will digitally store and transmit a patient's medical image to any facility in the market connected to the system. The images will be made available to the physican's home or office via the Aleta.Medcity.net website.
"The addition of PACS will improve the department's ability to get clinical information to the referring physician. Coupled with Powerscribe (the department's voice recognition dictating system), radiologists now have the ability to read films from any location in the department. The entire Radiology department is looking forward to this technology as a big improvement in service level," said Michael Scott, radiology director at Research Medical Center.
Some of the expected benefits as we implement a market-based PACS are:
- As more images are added into the PACS system, immediate availability of critical prior and comparison studies
- Improvement of turnaround time for reporting of studies
- Acceleration of clinical decision-making
- Simultaneous availability of images in hospitals, MD offices, and homes to allow the ability for specialists and radiologists to consult on patient cases
- Increase of referring physician satisfaction through the easy availability of images with reports throughout the facility market
If you have specific questions regarding this project, please contact your facility Radiology Director, HDIS or Physician Support Coordinator.
New Technologies Now Available at Research Brookside Campus!
Two new Siemens ultrasound units recently arrived at the Research Brookside Campus offering state-of-the- art technology. This new technology offers higher resolution, shorter exam times, and is ready for integration into the PACS system that will be installed at the end of June.
Along with the new ultrasound units, the Research Brookside Campus is excited to be able to offer referring physicians faster turnaround time for their patients radiology reports. This has been available since April 21 following the installation of PowerScribe, a voice recognition transcription system. While the exam is being dictated, PowerScribe is transcribing the report on a screen next to the radiologist. Once the radiologist is finished with the dictation, the report is ready to be signed off and faxed to the referring physician. Research Medical Center obtained PowerScribe in December 2005.
Finally, the Research Brookside Campus is proud to be able to offer a new rapid scheduling program for patients and referring physician offices. This new service cuts down on many of the questions asked by the scheduler, as well as the amount of time it takes to complete this process. This fast new way to schedule is currently being offered only for exams scheduled at the Research Brookside Campus location. "With a great staff, exciting new technology and scheduling made simple, we believe that we have the key to success," says Gwen Harrison, director of Imaging Services.
